The Australian Bureau of Statistics has confirmed that the figure for goods and services includes income earned in Australia and subsequently spent on rent, food and accommodation. There are questions whether this money – earned and spent in the country rather than imported into it – should be regarded as an export.

If expenditure in this category was deducted from the national accounts it would significantly lower the global figure of $15bn claimed for education-related export earnings.
